About psychological assessment

Discovering & accessing tests

Some tests are published (often requiring payment to obtain) and some are unpublished (more likely to be free, but also usually harder to find). The Mental Measurements Yearbook is one tool in our print collection that can point you to existing tests.

You may be able to find some tests through a Google search. Others may be more difficult to find. When you have found information about a test you would like to use, you may need to contact the test's publisher or author(s) to get a copy.

Some test locating tools are located below in the "Online collections of psychological surveys" box. You can also discover information about psychological tests and find examples of research done using them by doing a specialized search in the PsycINFO or ERIC databases.

Tests in PsycINFO & ERIC

To search in PsycINFO:

Make sure you're searching ONLY in PsycINFO, not in other EBSCOhost databases at the same time.

Click on Advanced Search:

Uncheck "Suggest Subject Terms" and type in your search terms.

Scroll down and click on "Tests & Testing" in the "Classification Codes" list:

Click "Search." You'll get a list of articles about studies that were performed using various tests matching your search terms.

If you look at the record for one of these articles, you will see a section listing the tests used in the study:

In the article itself, look at the "Methods" section for more information about how they used the test(s). There may also be a short description of the test, or even a segment of it.

Check the References list at the end of the article for publication information about the test.

Searching for tests in ERIC:

The process is very similar, but in ERIC, look for the "Tests/Questionnaires" option in the "Publication Type" list.
