Original (or "Primary") Source Documents in Historical Research

(Watch through 4:00.)

Types of original source documents you can expect to find:

  • Court cases
  • Legislative documents
  • Newspaper articles
  • Letters
  • Speeches (called "addresses" back in ye olden times)
  • Books (written by key people of the movement, or observers contemporary to it)
  • Advertisements
  • Pamphlets
  • Diaries
  • Autobiographies
  • Oral histories
  • Interviews (recorded or transcribed)
  • Organizational reports
  • Photographs or drawings
  • Posters
  • Articles written by a person who was involved (this is more of a "modern" type of source for social work; expect to see these written only in the last 50 years or so)

Look underneath the search bar and change the selection from "Articles" to "Case Law". Depending on your search, you may be able to further limit your results to federal or state cases.
