There are nearly 17,000 public libraries in the United States. They provide books, electronic resources, and other materials free to the residents of their local area. Public libraries are funded by both government funding and private sources. In Pennsylvania, state and local governments contribute to funding libraries, but do not provide the majority of operating funds. Most library funding comes from local fundraising, gifts, grants, fines and fees.
