Information Fluency: A Guide for Faculty

An in-depth faculty guide to information fluency, including links to resources on theory, curricular integration, and assessment.

Information Fluency Services and Resources at Reeves Memorial Library

Reeves Memorial Library offers a number of information fluency-related services and resources for faculty and students:

  • In-class librarian instructional sessions - These sessions are usually requested by faculty and involve a librarian coming to your classroom (or your class visiting Reeves Learning Commons) for face-to-face instruction. Common topics include learning to recognize and navigate different types of sources, such as peer-reviewed articles; how to articulate a topic or identify information needs; how to use library databases; how to evaluate sources and spot unreliable information or "fake news"; etc.
  • LibGuides - LibGuides are online research portals created and curated by Seton Hill librarians. They may serve as a starting point for research for a particular major or subject area, or they may even be designed to fill the specific needs of a particular course. They may be accessed from the library's website or can be linked in Canvas.
  • Videos or handouts - Librarians can provide video tutorials or handouts on topics such as how to create annotated bibliographies or get started with basic searches in a database that may be new to students.

  • Librarian consultation to help faculty with their teaching - Faculty can ask librarians for help when trying to locate information related to a difficult-to-research topic relevant to their class (e.g., indigenous peoples of Westmoreland County), or when discussing the trustworthiness of sources with their classes (e.g., "Is X a credible source, and how can we tell?").
  • Student referral for research help - When students are working on research projects, faculty can suggest that they contact a librarian for help.
  • Research consultation for personal scholarship - Librarians can assist faculty with their scholarly research by suggesting databases or other research tools, showing them how to leverage special features of research tools, or helping to track down difficult-to-find materials.
  • "Creating Effective Research Assignments" LibGuide for faculty - This LibGuide was created by Seton Hill's librarians to help faculty create research assignments that hone their students' information fluency skills, or to improve existing assignments that have yielded disappointing student product.  The guide is accessible via a tab on the "Meet Reeves--Faculty Orientation" LibGuide, or at the link below.
