Lumiere - Berkeley Language Center Library of Film & Clips

This guide for instructors shows how to use Lumiere, the Berkeley Language Center Library of Film & Clips as a source of film clips for use in Canvas courses.

Films Available at Seton Hill

There are a number of ways to find available film clips in Lumière.  These search options, as well as the other Lumière features, can be selected using the tabs at the top of the screen after you have logged into your LFLFC account.  You will find more details about these search options in the boxes below.

The Lumière database includes over 4,000 films, but only clips from those films that are available at Seton Hill in the Reeves Memorial Library DVD collection will be accessible to Seton Hill instructors.  Currently, over 480 films in a variety of languages are available for Seton Hill users.

Browse Films

By clicking on the "Films" tab, you can browse through a list of available films.  There are a number of options for filtering your browse list and sorting the results:

Language

The default language will be the language you chose when you registered for your Lumière account.  Only films in that language will show up in the browse list.  However, you can select a different language from the drop-down menu at the top of the screen, beneath the tabs.

Clip Availability

This drop-down menu in the top row above the film list gives you the choice of showing all films in your selected language, regardless of whether or not there are clips available for those films, or only showing those films with available clips.

Film Availability at Seton Hill

The drop-down menu that is second from the left in the top row gives you the option of showing only those films in your selected language that are available in the Seton Hill collection, or all films in that language that are part of the Lumière master collection.  Again, you can only use clips from films that are part of the Seton Hill collection.

Subtitle Version

The drop-down menu on the right in the top row allows you to choose versions of the films with or without subtitles in your selected language.

Genre

This drop-down menu gives you the option of choosing only live-action or animated films.

Format

The drop-down menu that is second from the left in the middle row gives you the option of limiting your results to either documentary/educational or fiction/fictionalized.

Release Date

These two date drop-down menus allow you to specify a range of films based on the original release date.

Title Sorting by Language

You can choose to sort the listed titles by their English titles or their titles in their original language.

To find out more about any given film, simply click on the title in the list.  You will see DVD cover art, DVD publication information, a plot description, and a list of any available clips.  Please keep in mind that not every film has published clips available.

Search Films

By clicking on the "Search" tab, you can use keywords to search for films in the Seton Hill collection, and you have the option of using a number of advanced search features:

Language

You can limit your search by the original language of the films.

Keyword Location

You can use either or both of the bottom two drop-down menus to specify whether your keyword appears in the original or English title, or is part of the film's description or the director's last name.  You can also specify whether those keywords are is part of or begin the title/description/director name.

Finding Clips

After you have searched for and selected a film, you can browse the available clips from that film by clicking on "View a list of all clips in this film" under the "Actions" heading.

You can narrow the list of clips based on the availability of comments, transcripts, and annotations.  You can also sort the clips by time in film (the point in the film's overall runtime at which the clip begins), year portrayed, duration, or order frequency.

To select a clip, simply click on the title link.  You can then view the clip and read the description and any available comments or annotations, and you can also order the clip by clicking "Add this clip to order."
