Lumiere - Berkeley Language Center Library of Film & Clips

This guide for instructors shows how to use Lumiere, the Berkeley Language Center Library of Film & Clips as a source of film clips for use in Canvas courses.

What is Lumière?

Lumière, the Berkeley Language Center Library of Film & Clips, is a tagged collection of clips from foreign- and English-language films.  Through Seton Hill University's participation in this project, Seton Hill instructors can apply for an account and use clips from the database as part of their foreign language and film studies course curriculum.

These clips can only be used within the Fair Use guidelines of United States Copyright Law, and clips can only be made available to students within the university's learning management system, Canvas.

Applying for an Account

If you’re a faculty member at Seton Hill, you may apply for an account at the following link:

https://lumiere.berkeley.edu/apply

You will be asked to review the terms of use and confirm that your use of the clips will comply with Fair Use.  You will also be asked to supply your Seton Hill email address and department information.  You will receive an email with your login ID as soon as your application is accepted, or the Lumière administrators will let you know why your application was not approved.

During the application process, you will be asked to choose a language, presumably the language you teach.  You can only have one language selected at a time in your user profile, but you will be able to find and access clips in other languages.

Once you’re a registered Lumière user, you will also be able to help out by volunteering to cut and tag clips from films owned by your institution.  Registered users can also make comments on clips.
