Copyright for Professors

Resources to help clarify fair use permissions and restrictions for educational purposes

Seton Hill Copyright Policy

The University's copyright policy is located in the PolicyTech policy management program. You can access PolicyTech by logging into MySHU and scrolling down to "Policies" in the MyMenu list. Once you have clicked the link and logged into PolicyTech, you can search for "Copyright" in the search box, and select the document titled "Inst. - Administrative - Copyright Policy."

Basic guidelines

To use any material that you did not create, it is important to do BOTH of the following:

1) Make sure you are permitted to use the material.

This can be done in any of these ways:

  • The material is in the public domain
  • The owner of the copyright has made it available for your intended use through a Creative Commons license (see box below)
  • You requested and received permission from the copyright holder
  • You purchased a license to use the material in the intended manner
  • Your intended usage most likely falls under the fair use defense

2) Give attribution for the material.

If you did not create it, you must cite it, regardless of how you obtained the permission to use the material. Even material in the public domain must be cited; failure to do so is unintentional plagiarism, as it implies that you created the content yourself.

Creative Commons licenses

Many works available on the web will have Creative Commons licenses. This type of license allows the item's creator to reserve some types of use while allowing others. This website will explain the different types of permissions creators can set for their works and how to tell what you may do with a file that is made available through a Creative Commons license.
