Instructors can add a variety of interactive elements to a video to make that video an active learning experience for their students. Nine customizable interaction types are available, including multiple choice questions, free response prompts, fill-in-the-blank questions, polls, and discussion forums.
To learn more about creating, editing, and using interactions, see the Academic Video Online Interactions Help page.
Most videos in Academic Video Online are accompanied by a transcript of the words spoken in the video. The transcript can be accessed by clicking the "Transcript" tab above the video player. It is synchronized with the video and will highlight text spoken as the video plays.
Transcripts are keyword searchable, and you can click a section within the transcript to skip forward or back within the corresponding video.
You can use Academic Video Online's "Cite" feature, accessible via the tab above the video player, to get a citation in MLA, APA, or Chicago format. You can select your citation style from the drop-down menu, then copy and paste the citation into your references list.
If you consistently use the same citation format, you can check the "Remember selected style" box, and that citation format will be displayed by default each time you use the "Cite" feature in the future.
Some videos in Academic Video Online come with pre-made clips, created by subject matter experts at Alexander Street and in the greater scholarly community, that are ideal for use in presentations or assigned work.
Additionally, you can create your own customized clips by selecting the "Clips" tab above the video player, then clicking the "Create Clip" button on the right side of the window if no clips are available. Please note, you must be signed in to your personal user account to create or edit a clip.
You must give your clip a helpful title, indicate the start and end times, and add a description to give the clip context. You also have the option to share your clip with others at Seton Hill ("Institutional"), or with anyone who has access to the video at other institutions ("Public"). Once you have finished creating the clip, click "Save."
NOTE: Clips have their own unique embed codes and links that allow you to share and embed them for other users, but your clip must be set to "Institutional" or "Public" in order for it to be shared or embedded in Canvas. If your clip is set to "Private," even you will not be able to embed it in Canvas.
