Academic Video Online

This guide will walk you through the various features of Academic Video Online, an extensive streaming video collection available to students, faculty, and staff.

Sharing Videos via Permalink

Each video in Academic Video Online has a unique permalink/durable URL that can be copied and pasted to make sharing quick and easy. To find the permalink, play the video and click the "Share" tab above the player window.

In the Share layer at the bottom of the screen, click the red "Copy Permalink" button, then click the top "Copy" button in the window that opens:

Embedding Videos in Canvas

As an alternative to sharing a permalink with students in Canvas, which would allow them to watch the video on the Academic Video Online platform, instructors can search for and embed videos directly in Canvas using the Alexander Street Video app.

Videos can be embedded in existing Canvas pages, or they can be added as individual assignments or module items.

To embed a video in a Canvas page, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the Rich Content Editor and place your cursor in the spot where you'd like the video to appear.
  2. Click the Apps icon in the toolbar (the plug icon: ) and select "View All" from the drop-down menu.
  3. Select "Alexander Street Video" from the list of available apps.
  4. An Alexander Street Video search window should open up.  Type your search terms into the search box to find the video you want to embed.

  5. Once you find your video in the search results, click on either "Embed Medium Size" or "Embed Large Size," and your video will be embedded in the page at the location of your cursor.  It is recommended that you select "Embed Medium Size," as users can enlarge the viewing window by clicking the "Enter Full Screen" button.

To embed a video by creating a new assignment, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Assignments page of your course, click the "+ Assignment" button to create a new assignment.
  2. Click the "More Options" button to open up the full page of assignment settings.
  3. Name the assignment (you might use the title of the video) and add any necessary introductory text to the Rich Content Editor box.
  4. Below the Rich Content Editor box, locate the "Submission Type" box and select "External Tool" from the drop-down menu.
    • NOTE: If you already have Academic Video Online open in another tab, and you've already found the video you'd like to embed, you can skip Steps 5-8 and simply copy the URL in the "Via Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)" box on the video's Share screen, then paste the URL into the External Tool Options link box.  Then, you can proceed to Step 9.
  5. Click the "Find" button and select "Alexander Street Video" from the list of available apps.
  6. An Alexander Street Video search window should open up.  Type your search terms into the search box to find the video you want to include in the assignment.

  7. Click the "Return Link" button, and the search window should disappear, leaving the list of apps on the screen.  Click the "Select" button at the bottom of this list.
  8. The URL for your video should appear in the labeled Find box in the "Submission Type" box.
  9. Once you have finished configuring the other settings for the assignment, click "Save & Publish" at the bottom of the page.

To embed a video by adding a new module item, complete the following steps:

  1. On the Modules page of your course, find the module to which you would like to add the video and click the "+" button to add a new item to the module.
  2. In the Add Item window, select "External Tool" from the drop-down menu.
    • NOTE: If you already have Academic Video Online open in another tab, and you've already found the video you'd like to embed, you can skip Steps 3-5 and simply copy the URL in the "Via Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI)" box on the video's Share screen, then paste the URL into the URL box in the "Add Item" pop-up window.  Then, you can enter a page name into the designated box and proceed to Step 6.
  3. Select "Alexander Street Video" from the list of available apps.
  4. An Alexander Street Video search window should open up.  Type your search terms into the search box to find the video you want to include in the assignment.

  5. Click the "Return Link" button, and the search window should disappear, leaving the list of apps on the screen.
  6. Click the "Add Item" button at the bottom of the window.
  7. The new item for the video should appear underneath the module title along with any other items that are part of the module. If you used the search tool in Canvas to find the video, the video's title will be used automatically as the name of the new item.  This name can be edited if needed.
