Using the Dewey Decimal System (Call Numbers)

Here are instructions for finding a print book downstairs on the shelf, but remember that you can ALWAYS ask for help at the front desk!

First, search for a book using the library catalog, called HillCat:

When you find a book that DOESN'T have a globe picture on it, it's a print book that is downstairs in the library building. Click on Availability:

Now, write down the call number (you can also have it texted to your phone):

Downstairs in the shelving area, you will see that the shelves have number ranges on each end. Look at the first 3 digits in your book's call number. In our example, that is 781. Find the shelf row where that number should be located. You may have to open the shelves to get in! Press the green arrow buttons as necessary.

Now, look for the books whose numbers start with 781.

Now we need to find the numbers AFTER the decimal point. These are decimal numbers, so 781.1 comes BEFORE 781.234. We're looking for 781.556. In the picture below, we're getting closer; we found 781.5. We just have to go a little farther.

Once you get to the right numbers, we look at the letters that are at the end of the call number. Inside the same number, the books will be alphabetical; our book, 781.556 S43, comes AFTER 781.556 S27 but BEFORE 781.556 T24zwi.

And here's our book!
