D&B Hoovers

A detailed user guide for D&B Hoovers, a key business resource offering company profile and contact information, financial analysis documents, industry and analyst reports, news, and more.

Searching for Industry Reports

If you need to research an entire industry, rather than a single company, D&B Hoovers provides a wealth of industry information and a variety of industry reports from leading business research firms.

There are two ways to search for an industry in D&B Hoovers. Both paths will take you to the same place, so choose whichever strategy works best for you:

1. Use the Search bar.

Step 1. Select "Industries" from the drop-down list in the top Search bar, then type a keyword that describes the industry you're researching.

Step 2. Your search results will be a list of industries, with an industry name and corresponding industry code (such as a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code) for each industry. See the example below from a search for "Entertainment."

Step 3. If you click on a search result, you will be taken to the full industry report page.

2. Use the "Research Industries" Tile on the Desktop page.

Step 1. On the main D&B Hoovers Desktop page, click the "Get Started" button on the "Research Industries" Tile.

Step 2. The "Search Industries" page offers three headings with different search options:

  • Industries - This option allows you to browse a hierarchical list of industry categories and subcategories based on classification systems such as NAICS (the default). Click the "Browse" button to display the list, then use the Plus sign boxes to open up the subcategories and check the box next to the industry.

You can select more than one category if necessary. Or, if you know the name of the industry or its code in the selected classification system, you can type it into the search box.

  • Industry Type - This option lets you choose a classification system from the "Industry Source" drop-down list, then type a keyword or keywords into the "Industry Description" search box. If there are any matching descriptions, you can click the "View Results" button in the upper right corner. If the "View Results" button is grayed out, you will see at the top of the page that there were no matching results.
  • Keyword Search - You can use this option to search for industries across all classification systems. Type your keyword or keywords into the search box, using Boolean Operators such as AND, OR, and NOT if needed, and then click the "View Results" button in the upper right corner.

Step 3. If you click on a search result, you will be taken to the full industry report page.

Industry Reports: A Deeper Dive

Industry reports provide a wealth of information about a given industry or sector. The amount of information available varies in relation to how broad the industry category is. For example, Amusement and Theme Parks (NAICS code 71311) is a comparatively narrow category, so the report is not as extensive as the report for its broader parent industry, Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (NAICS code 71). The screenshot below shows part of a report for Amusement and Theme Parks.

The Industry Summary page provides an overview of the industry, with a brief description; key industry activities; market research reports; top companies operating in that sector; news; and a geographic business segment breakdown with accompanying charts which can be sorted by region.

More details for most of these report elements can be accessed using the navigation menu along the left, which is divided into two sections:

Industry Related

  • Industry Summary
  • Latest News
  • Industry Participants - This subsection lists all companies operating in that industry. The list can be sorted according to number of employees, assets, sales, or company name, and the list can also be filtered by location, company size, and other aspects in order to narrow the results.
  • Triggers - This subsection shows recent positive and negative developments in the industry which may result in opportunities or threats to that industry. These can be sorted by date.
  • Industry Activities - This subsection offers a list of business types which fall under this industry according to the classification system used to name and code the industry. For example, the activities listed under NAICS industry Amusement and Theme Parks include theme parks and water parks.

Market Research

  • D&B Hoovers offers market research reports from leading firms such as MarketLine, The Freedonia Group, and Risk Management Association (RMA). Reports are sorted according to date, with the most recent shown at the top of the list. For broader industry sectors, the number of available reports will often be lengthy, and individual reports may focus on specific subsectors that fall under that broader parent industry.
  • You can choose "All Market Research" in the left-hand menu to see all reports from all firms, or you can select specific firms to see only their reports.

Market Research and Analyst Reports

D&B Hoovers offers market research reports from leading firms such as MarketLine, The Freedonia Group, and Risk Management Association (RMA). You can also find analyst reports on specific companies from some of these same firms, as well as reports from brokerage houses and other organizations such as Deutsche Bank and Wright Investors Service.

As noted above, many of these reports are linked from industry reports. However, you can also search for market research and analysts' reports by selecting "Research & Reports" and performing a search using the top Search bar, or by clicking the "Analyze Markets" Tile on the Desktop.

The "Research & Reports" search screen allows you to tailor your search as much or as little as you'd like. You can limit your search to either Analyst Reports (most helpful for finding reports on specific companies) or Market Research Reports (for finding reports on specific industries) using the "Report Type" drop-down menu. You can also limit by Brokerage House/Source for reports from a specific firm, and by date range, company name, etc.

If you're looking for a market research report on a specific industry, you can use the "Industries" search option.

You can also use the "Keyword Search" box to find reports that contain your search term.
